Determining the correct size for your E.A.Mattes saddle pad involves more than just considering your saddle’s seat size. Within the same discipline, saddle shapes and sizes can vary significantly. Before investing in your Mattes saddle pad, take a few moments to measure your saddle if you are uncertain.
Key Measurement: Contact Area
The most critical measurement is the length of the contact area of the saddle, including the panels that contact the horse's back.
Step 1: Measure the Saddle
Using a flexible measuring tape, measure from an imaginary line at the front edge of the saddle (marked 'A' in the picture) and follow the contour of the saddle until you reach another imaginary line at the back edge of the saddle padding (marked 'B' in the picture).
Step 2: Calculate Minimum Back Length
Once you have your measurement from Step 1, add 6 centimetres. This will give you the minimum back length required for the saddle pad.
Step 3: Refer to the Size Chart
Consult the saddle pad size chart specific to your saddle type (e.g., Dressage). Look at Column A-B for the back length.
Saddle Pad Size | A-B Measure |
Small | 47 centimetres |
Medium | 54 centimetres |
Large | 58 centimetres |
Extra Large | 62 centimetres |
Things to Consider
- If you are opting for top front or rear sheepskin trim, this will occupy approximately 5 centimetres of space at the front and/or back.
- If you choose piping instead of sheepskin, note that each row of piping takes up about 1 centimetre of room at both the front and back, crossing over the spine.
- Sheepskin takes precedence over piping; if you’re including sheepskin, focus solely on that measurement.
Be aware that quoted sizes for saddle pads may vary by +/- 2 centimetres, and saddle pads can shrink by up to 5% when washed.
Taking the time to correctly size your saddle pad will ensure comfort for your horse by reducing the risk of any pressure points created from a saddle pad being too small.
