For Dressage competitions in Australia run under Equestrian Australia (EA) rules, having your bridle number clearly visible is mandatory. There are many off the shelf bridle number products available that can be used. Many riders are opting to have their bridle numbers embroidered onto their saddle pads, a trend that combines practicality with a touch of elegance.
Equestrian Australia (EA) Rules for Bridle Numbers
The Equestrian Australia National Dressage Rules outlines all of the rules pertaining to the use of Bridle Numbers, an oversight is given in the dot points below which are current at time of writing but it is always recommended to check the latest version of the Equestrian Australia National Dressage Rules that can be found on the Equestrian Australia website.
- Two numbers, one of each side of the horse must be worn whilst competing or when being ridden, lunged, grazed, led or tethered whilst on competition grounds.
- Competition numbers must be a minimum of 3.5-4cm in height, be in black or dark coloured text, clearly displayed on a white background.
- Stallions must clearly display green identification stallion discs on each side by way of:
- E.A. branded green stallion identification discs and bridle number displayed separately; or
- A green bridle number holder displaying the bridle number.
For more detail on requirements for stallions, please refer to the E.A. Stallion Safe Practice Rules & Regulations Policy.
Benefits of Embroidered Bridle Numbers
- Visibility: This aspect is appreciated by Judges, Stewards and other Event Officials. Being able to see bridle numbers with clarity from a distance makes their role much easier.
- Compliance: As long as your embroidery is compliant, you will have no worries about being in a state of non-compliance. If you were using a pin on bridle number you need to ensure it is securely attached every time and hope that one or both of the bridle numbers do not become dislodged whilst riding.
- Reduced Stress: Having embroidered bridle numbers means one less thing you need to remember to take to your next competition. All you need to remember is to pack your competition saddle pad.
- Durability: Embroidered saddle pad numbers will last the life of the saddle pad. Careful care in washing and maintaining your saddle pad will ensure maximum longevity.
- Personalisation: The primary purpose of an embroidered bridle number is functionality, there is an opportunity to add your unique touch by way of a black or dark coloured thread and font style. Embroidered bridle numbers can also be complimented by embellishments. Always check the Equestrian Australia National Dressage Rules before getting your embroidery done.
